WHAT IT SAYS
Quoting the petawatt post, it points out that 10 to 100 petawatts is the power level of a Kardashev Type I civilisation.
CONTEXT
Carl Sagan's continuous version of the scale, which this site uses, puts Type I at 10¹⁶ W, which is 10 PW: K = (log10 P − 6) / 10, so 10 PW gives K = 1.0 and 100 PW gives K = 1.1. Other authors (Lemarchand) define Type I as 10¹⁶ to 10¹⁷ W, roughly the sunlight Earth receives; incident solar power at Earth is about 1.74 × 10¹⁷ W (174 PW).
Humanity's average power is about 20.6 TW by this site's monthly estimate (K 0.7313 for August 2026). 10 PW is roughly 490 times that (Observatory arithmetic).
WHAT IT MEANS FOR K
Neutral. The post restates a definition; it doesn't change how much energy anyone produces. It is accurate for Sagan's formula at 10 PW and for the 10¹⁶–10¹⁷ W band. It also puts the petawatt claim in proportion: a petawatt per year, sustained for about a decade, would reach Type I.
CLAIMS
- 10–100 PW corresponds to Kardashev Type I.
EVIDENCE
- Sagan: Type I = 10¹⁶ W = 10 PW (K = 1.0); 100 PW is K = 1.1.
- Lemarchand's Type I band is 10¹⁶–10¹⁷ W.
REASONING
- Definitions don't move K; only harnessed power does.
- The framing is useful: it shows how far 20.6 TW is from Type I (about 490×, Observatory arithmetic), and why a petawatt-per-year build rate would matter if it existed.
